First Earth Day 1970

Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin conceived the idea for Earth Day following a trip he took to Santa Barbara right after the horrific oil spill off the coast in 1969.

Outraged by the devastation and Washington political inertia, Nelson proposed a national teach-in on the environment to be observed by every university campus in the U.S.

“I am convinced that all we need to do to bring an overwhelming insistence of the new generation that we stem the tide of environmental disaster is to present the facts clearly and dramatically.”

One of the organizers of the event said:

“We’re going to be focusing an enormous amount of public interest on a whole, wide range of environmental events, hopefully in such a manner that it’s going to be drawing the interrelationships between them and, getting people to look at the whole thing as one consistent kind of picture, a picture of a society that’s rapidly going in the wrong direction that has to be stopped and turned around.”

When it comes to saving our planet for future generations, we all have the best intentions. But in order to chart a new course on energy and climate, we must turn those good intentions into action — and it begins with each of us taking initiative in our own homes and communities.  Read more below and at the Greenhouse Neutral Foundation…

Suzanne, I was astonished to learn the first Earth Day in 1970 was in response to a 1969 Santa Barbara oil-spill disaster, and the Gulf disaster started the day before Earth Day in 2010.
In all that time our dependence on oil has only increased. Our politicians are more bought off by Big Oil and Coal than ever. Investment in clean energy is a pittance.
I’m going to sign some of those petitions you have listed on your Gulf Oil Disaster Action Central, for which I thank you.
But what I’d really like to do is shove Obama’s face into a barrel of crude and ask him just how much he cares about my children.

Above and below we reproduce the comment of Carlos Montoya, who on our Gulf Oil Disaster Action Central page wrote:

I don’t know what shocked me more, seeing that an oil spill that happened before I was even born is the thing that started Earth Day, or seeing that meter telling me how much oil is still pouring into the Gulf!
Shame on all the people who could have prevented this. Not just BP, but all the Presidents and Congressmen and an entire PATHETIC generation of Americans!
Your fathers fought a world war and gave you opportunity galore, and this is what you do for YOUR children and grandchildren?
I’m willing to bet most visitors to this site won’t even take a minute to sign a petition on your Gulf Oil Disaster Action Central page!

I’m ashamed of my generation and my country. What will our children think of us when this all comes home to roost and it’s too late for them to do anything about it but try to survive?

  5. Winston says:

I’m horrified by this tragedy and disgusted by the greed and short-sightedness that caused it, but not surprised. America is a nation of shameful gluttons, and lacks the wisdom to come in out of the oil. How ironic that BRITISH Petroleum landed near New Orleans and conquered your southern coast with a single bomb killing 11 of your citizens. And now you bleat and beg for reparations even as you plan to resume more drilling by BP and others off more of your shores. Stupid Americans.
