Rupert Murdoch, the multi-billionaire libertarian whose News Corp is the world’s second largest media conglomerate and owns Fox News, has announced that he has been persuaded by an Al Gore presentation that Global Warming is a serious threat to mankind. We don’t think it a green-washing ploy,  as Murdoch has directed the investment of many millions to get the senior executives of his many corporations trained in the facts, and has committed News Corp to achieve a neutral carbon footprint in a short period of time.   

Fox News has routinely ridiculed global warming and promoted the Tea Party, and Sara Palin who has called global warming “snake-oil science”. Murdoch said that Fox News should not be endorsing the Tea Party. News Corp executives have since said that News Corp will not impose its will on Fox News editorial decision-making. However, upon learning Hannity was going to broadcast his Fox News program from a Tea Party rally in Ohio last week, News Corp executives intervened, cancelling Hannity’s broadcast from Ohio and ordering him back to New York on short notice.   

While we at SEN do not think this makes Murdoch a hero, nor Fox News a less destructive force, we are grateful that Murdoch has joined the ranks of the enlightened as to the reality of the climate change crisis and the need to take decisive action insofar as his own empire.   

FURTHER, we at SEN would like to think that our own Hugh MacDougall’s call to spiritual action, and the Prayer Chain it inspired — a Prayer Chain which was enjoined by hundreds on Care2 alone — are already achieving their goals. To quote Hugh, who wrote BEFORE the news about Murdoch:   

“Let our strategic target be to send out for a man or woman of immense material power who is part of the greed-driven system that is damaging us all, that he or she will experience an epiphany, a life-changing revelation that causes a complete turnaround in their thinking. It’s ok to focus on a particular name if one comes to your mind, but don’t set out to target one person. Let us trust, that which flows through us knows better than we do who is the one able to receive. Don’t think of someone you are angry at unless you can drop that anger completely and see them as a fellow human who is doing the best they know how, even if we think they are horribly wrong. We are sending the power of love, peace and compassion, which can change the world. — Hugh MacDougall, Australia, SEN Honorary Advisor”.
